Welcome from Jamie Blake, Corporate Director of Environment & Sustainable Transport
Corporate Director of Environment & Sustainable Transport
Thank you for your interest in these new and exciting roles at Newham Council.
Newham is an aspirational borough with huge potential and a clear vision based on building wealth within the local community, protecting the vulnerable and dealing with environmental challenges linked to the climate and health emergencies.
Proud of to be one of the youngest and most diverse boroughs in the UK, we are also one of the fastest growing in the country, with a population set to rise to over 370,000 by 2023. Home to the Olympic Park, the London Stadium and other key iconic landmarks, Newham will continue to see a significant amount of development over the next decade.
Appreciating the need to work differently, we have adapted our approach to listen to our local community; opening our processes to scrutiny; and being open to change and improvement. Working in partnership to deliver on key themes of the Community Wealth Building Strategy, we adopt an approach that seeks to invest locally and supports the growth of our local economy. This has been demonstrated recently by the internalisation of front line services and our approach to establishing training opportunities through graduate and apprentice initiatives.
As the first London Borough to declare a Climate Emergency, we have introduced a number of environmental measures to tackle global warming, poor air quality and waste. Making positive steps towards the Corporate Plan and Community Wealth Building agenda, we have also set up an ‘Air Quality Task Force’ to coordinate our approach and address health, transport and environmental concerns, which are integral to improving air quality and our environment.
However, this is only the beginning. We have ambitious, yet realistic plans to transform our Public Realm, making the borough carbon neutral by 2030 and carbon zero by 2050. With the Mayor firmly behind the drive to tackle key environmental issues; we aim to see a vast improvement in the quality of our parks, open spaces and neighbourhoods; to provide an attractive borough that encourages active lifestyles, social integration and civic responsibility.
The roles take ownership of leading the delivery of key council services, proving strategic direction to achieve the corporate objectives outlined in the corporate plan. Responsible for a large workforce, we are looking for candidates that can coach, develop and drive teams to operational excellence, delivering a whole systems approach to performance management, continuous improvement and the changing demands of the Borough’s needs.
If you are ambitious, have strong leadership skills, can identify innovative solutions by challenging the status quo, and have a solid track record in driving change and improvement, I would encourage you to join us on this exciting journey to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
