Welcome from Colin Ansell, Corporate Director of Adults & Public Health
Thank you for your interest in joining our exciting journey of improvement at Newham Council.
We’re an aspirational borough with great potential and a clear vision based on building wealth within the local community. Proud of to be one of the youngest and most diverse boroughs in the UK, we are also one of the fastest growing in the country, with a population set to rise to over 370,000 by 2023. Home to the Olympic Park, the London Stadium and other key iconic landmarks, Newham will continue to see a significant amount of development over the next decade.
The Adults and Health Directorate was created as a wider corporate restructure mandated by Cabinet in April 2019, Making Newham Work better for everyone. The Directorate is responsible for ensuring directly commissioned services are targeted to the Borough’s most vulnerable adults and older people, prioritising Newham’s public health and safeguarding needs. Delivering a wide range of front line statutory social care, rough sleeping, mental health, learning difficulties and public health services; it’s imperative that we have the right people, systems and commissioning arrangements in place to meet the demands of the Borough.
The impact of Covid-19 has been felt acutely within the Directorate. The pandemic has drawn attention to the inequalities that exist within our society. Various factors have led to the acceleration of the infection rate which include, population density, homes with several generations, underlying health issues and poor air quality. In line with the learning from Covid-19, reviewing the social care offer has been listed as a corporate priority; ensuring our services meet the current and future needs of residents.
Our teams have been exemplary in the handling of the crisis, which has enabled the Council to maintain delivery of front-line services. However, this has highlighted the opportunity to strengthen our senior management team, increasing the strategic capabilities to deliver service priorities, providing a platform for the service to grow, whilst adapting through the next phase of the Covid-19 pandemic.
As we look to strengthen our leadership team, these positions will play an active role in leading the development of policies and practices, ensuring Newham’s Adults and Health functions contribute to the delivery of the Council’s corporate plan; responding to the health emergency and the Borough’s Community Wealth agenda.
The roles take ownership of leading the delivery of key council services, providing strategic direction to achieve the corporate objectives outlined in the corporate plan. Responsible for a diverse portfolio of accountabilities, we are looking for candidates that have proven experience in developing and driving teams to operational excellence, whilst supporting a whole systems approach to performance management, continuous improvement and the changing demands of the Borough’s needs.
If you’re ambitious, have strong leadership skills, can identify innovative solutions by challenging the status quo, and have a solid track record in driving change and improvement, I would encourage you to join us on this exciting journey to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
